House finch rests wounded wing at PROWLS

House finch

When this sweet house finch arrived at Powell River Orphaned Wildlife Society, it was first thought she had suffered a slight head trauma after being struck by a car on Marine Avenue.

The bird made a speedy recovery because it was alert. But when she tried to fly, she flipped over while protecting one wing.

Further investigation revealed a shoulder injury and her stay was extended.

This beautiful singer eats only seeds. Large flocks will descend on a bird feeder and brighten it up with their bold red breasts and heads.

This nomadic finch ranges widely and is rated by Partners in Flight as “a common bird in steep decline” due to habitat loss, pesticides and predators.
