Striking change in plumage of overwintering evening grosbeak

Evening grosbeak

An EVENING GROSBEAK, overwintering on the front porch at PROWLS and waiting for other grosbeaks to return in early May, appears to be going through a striking hormonal change.

He no longer has the male’s bright yellow monobrow or yellow chest and shoulders with white wing tips but has become markedly toned down. Now with a dull white monobrow and pale golden highlights on soft gray plumage, he is looking much like a female!

Wow!
